Nikon Flash / Speedlight

I am looking to purchase a Nikon flash/speedlight to use with D700. Never owned one before so not sure what I need versus want. Would like to get one what can be used for taking large family (25) portraits. Besides the flash, what other accessories will I need? Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated!
