Dust in 17-55mm
Sep 1, 2010

About a year ago I remember reading a post in dpreview that people loved the 17-55mm lens but were troubled by the dust that can get in the lens.

I had mine for about 6 months at that point. I never really looked inside the lens but after reading the post.... well there was some dust that I don't see in my other lenses. But it was very limited and did not affect my images. I love this lens and its on my 7D (used to be 50d) about 80% of the time.

So now that I am "dust aware" on this lens.... I check it regularly.

Now 12 months later..... its a mess in there. Lots of dust. I still don't see an image impact but in another year.....

So what do other owners do? Can it be cleaned? Do I sell it and buy another? I thought of going for the 24-70mm which is sealed but I like getting open to 17mm. There is also the 17-40mm but I owned that and gave it up so I could get down to f2.8.

I wish that they would make a 17-70mm 2.8 L. I wonder if that is physically possible.
