Need Advice: EF 24-70mm L F/2.8

I have an opportunity to buy this lens (slightly used) as a general, all purpose lens to replace my Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens which has had the biscuit. Does anyone use this lens? Can you give me some feedback? I've read some mixed reviews about it and would appreciate some opinions from users on this forum.
