Flash shooters a little help with Hummers
Aug 28, 2010

I've been shooting hummers with 3 flash units (sb900, sb800, sb600) and posted many results here but, some comments regarding the use of flash have me re-thinking my setup.

I have a flash on either side of the feeder slightly higher than the anticipated subject area. I have a sb900 on camera setup for su-4 and using manual 1/16 -0.7. I did try 1/32 this morning but more tests are necessary.

My preference is to freeze the wings in motion without ghosting them and to have the image look as natural as it can. I can do this with manual settings on the flash units. The problem is the intensity of flash seems to look unnatural. Would a softbox or something else similar help with this issue or cause more problems?

Below is an example: How can I improve the lighting for a more natural tone. If you feel it can be done in post or would like to edit this image be my guest.

peace,

Ray
