Sony A55: Best Street Photography Camera Ever?
Aug 28, 2010

When doing close range street\candid photography it is often desireable to shoot from the hip. Traditionally, one would stop down to between f/5.6 and f/8 to increase the depth of field, and then prefocus to the anticipated distance ("zone focussing"). Framing is then a matter of gueswork and skill. Liveview has changed this, but is not really useful on most liveview DSLRs because contrast detect autofocus is too slow, and zone focussing still needs to be used. On the Sony A550, A560, and A580, this is a different matter because phase detect AF actually works during Liveview! It is now possible to shoot from the hip, at large apertures, with fast AF, and Liveview framing! The A55 further improves on these cameras by offering higher fps, smaller size, and less noise(fixed mirror).

To recap:

  • small size (less conspicuous, less intimidating)

  • less noise due to fixed mirror.

  • 10fps

  • phase detect autofocus during Liveview

  • articulating screen, enabling shooting from the hip.

All I want from Sony now is an updated compact 24mm SAM\SSM prime. (Distagon too big and expensive)
