Nikon Lenses Better Choice??

Was just getting ready to decide on my first DSLR (Canon 550D or 7D.....sorry) until I discovered the lens options were RATHER LIMITED. The 15-85 was small, lightweight and affordable, the optics mediocre at best. the 17-85 2.8 was heavy, large and expensive, but the optics were good. I was wanting to spend about $1500, but could go a little higher if the "bang" was worth it. What would be the equivalent (hopefully superior) options in the Nikon lineup. PS, I'm not a "newbie" photog...been shooting film SLR for 40+ years. Recently been using a Sony P+S. Im just learning the digital lingo....so please be gentle with me!! Jimmy V
