Note the highlights on the water drops. They are small, and very crisp.

I think this diffuser could produce very similar results as yours. Notice that the screen is large enough and at a similar distance, so that the effective surface could be about the same at most flash zoom settings (notice that if the diffuser mount trips the diffuser microswitch on the SB-800 it goes to wide angle), with some less bright edge area remaining. Perhaps the screen could be a bit less translucent, so that there would be less directional light from the flash. The inner foil may not be of assistance for soft edges, but I'd guess it wouldn't do much harm.
