4/3 Dead - it's official
Aug 10, 2010

OK, I do not want to sound alarmist, but after reading the just released Olympus Annual Report, it seems to be pretty sure that 4/3 is dead.

From the report, goals for next 5 years:

"As for interchangeable lens-type digital camera systems, we will intensify our investment in technology and product development on the new-generation Micro Four Thirds System. We will reinforce the sales and marketing, distribution and after-sales service structure as well. By doing so, we aim to attain a global market share of 20% on an unit-basis for interchangeable lens-type digital cameras in the fiscal year ending March 31 2015."

Except for brief mention of E-3, it's all about m4/3. No mention of 4/3 whatsoever, like it does not exist at all. So it seems pretty much clear where regular 4/3 is heading. Of course it's nothing we did not know, but stated in that way it clearly shows that Olympus will not continue regular 4/3. So it seems that all we who have bought into 4/3 can congratulate ourselves for being left high and dry. We are doomed!
