I've tried something similar to this, and it doesn't work as well.

Mounting a diffuser (scrim) on the flash makes it too far from the subject, and too directional.

The pop-up diffuser is VERY close to the subject, and also provides a fair amount of wrap-around light. It's still directional, but the shadows are subtle.

Do you have any idea where we can acquire the exact same scrim matterial?

Not sure. It's probably rip-stop nylon.
