When M4/3 can be a bargain
Aug 5, 2010

There have been several threads in this forum about the high cost of M4/3 cameras and lenses. And it really is an expensive way to go, if you are trying to replace a DSLR system with a M4/3 system. In order to get full system functionality you really have to spend a lot.

For example:

Olympus E620
9-18mm lens
14-42mm lens
40-150mm lens
50mm f/2.0 Macro
........................................... Amazon.com cost $1604

Olympus EP2
VF-2
9-18mm lens
14-42mm lens
45-200mm lens
45mm f/2.8 Macro
........................................... Amazon.com cost $2758

You just paid around a $1250 premium for having a smaller system that won't focus quite as fast. That's right. You spent 70% more in order to get a smaller and lighter system. And your lenses probably aren't as good, and you are limited to a group of 10 lenses, rather than around 40. And remember both the systems I used as examples can use legacy lenses with adapters.

However... if you are buying M4/3 as a high end compact to supplement your DSLR, then it is an absolute bargain when compared to high end compacts with small sensors. It cost just a few dollars more, but provides the same quality as your DSLR will.

For example:

Olympus EPl1 with 14-42mm lens.......$524
Panasonic LX5................................$500
Canon G11....................................$450
Fuji F200EXR..................................$400

So right now M4/3 is both very expensive and very cheap.
Depending on your intended use.
