How differnet is Canon 28-300 lense compared to others?

Hey.

My favorite lens is busted. 18 - 55 mm

Now I have to buy a new one. I am looking into 28 - 300 canon lens which is very expensive here in Norway,.

But is it worth it? I mean is it THAT much better then other cheaper brands?
