I have this too sometimes with my D300s .. a "target" on which I can reproduce this pretty quick (AF-S, single point) are roofs with those reddish clay shindles.

Apparently the uniform pattern of the shindles messes up the AF detection. The D300s manual names several occasions on which the AF can fail with or without a positive focus confirmation in the viewfinder. So unless this happens all the time this might be normal -- go check your manual and see what it says.
