Nikon MB-D10 Battery grip - worth having for my D-300?

I have a Nikon D-300, which I love. It is my understanding that I can get 8 fps if I attach a battery pack.

Is this correct?
Is a battery pack worth the weight it adds to the camera?

I'm going to Alaska in the fall and want to have everything possible to make my photography as good as it can be. I'm confident with my camera, have checked out all the bells and whistles.. but wonder about this 5 lb. addition.

Advice, please?
