Better video for Point and Shoot camera via firmware upgrade

My question is in general about improving video quality/or frame rate on point and shoot cameras via firmware upgrade. Is it even possible? I know firmware upgrades has been done to full frame cameras like 5Dmark2, can something similar be done on a smaller scale? for example the Canon SD980IS that i have does do a 720p video at 30 frames per second, can that be improved to 60 frames per second? I know certain upgrades have been done via CHDK to get RAW support and other things, but can the same be done or is it a hardware limitation mainly? Anyone's thoughts or ideas who have more understanding in the subject of video improvement possibilities with point and shoot cameras are welcome.

thanks,
Dennis
