Is the 50mm 1.8 still useful on a APS-C sensor?

I'm planning to buy this lens for a Canon 500D/T1i, but since the 1.6 crop makes it an 80mm, i'm worried about if this lens would still be as versatile as the original 50mm that its meant to be. Are there any users with experience with the 50mm 1.8 on a APS-C censor that would like to give me their thoughts?
