Where now for Sony's lenses?
Jul 12, 2010

While most people are gnashing their teeth about the long wait for an A7xx and video in the dslr's there is much less attention to the Sony lens situation. Here are a few thoughts.

The lens choice offered by a company makes a big difference in the amateur/enthusiast market. Canon's lens selection is very wide, well-established and easy to get hold of at good prices. Sony has a long way to go, and seems pretty much incapable of moving quickly.

The new Zeiss 24mm f/2: where the hell is it?

The advent of a whole range of video enabled dslrs means that ssm or silent sam should be implemented in all lenses, in order to minimise focus noise. Will this start happening?

f/4 lenses: the 24/105 f/4 was rumored years ago, and no sign still. No 70-200 f/4, and the 70-200 f/2.8 is overpriced with no IS. No 300 f/4. No 17-40 f4. Perhaps they are afraid of cannibilising the high end zeiss lenses; if so we should all quit now, as there is no way sony can pretend that it's exclusively high end when it doesn't even use it's own cameras for a publicity shoot.

in other words, the situation for amateur/enthusiast sony dslr users has been so cripplingly bad on the DSLR body front that we've ended up forgetting how shockingly awful it is on the sony lens front...
