Do we over-discuss technical aspect of a violin solo?

If you go listen to an orchestra, a concert, a violin solo, you expect the notes to be close to flawless. At this high level, the work is almost perfect, it's the music, the emotion, the intensity that counts. But if you send your kid to piano class you expect every note to be criticized as he plays simple sheet music.

I feel it's the same way here. You need to work on the technical side first, basic composition, sharpness, exposure, even the rules of composition; S-curves, empty space, balance.

Yes, there is some music where style overcomes technical ability, and the same is true for photography. Sometimes a simple grab shot can pack a lot of emotion, but I think that's the exception and not the rule.
