50-D & 24-105 f4 l combo

All,

I am looking to purchase my first DSLR. I am primarily looking at the 50-D, 24-105 combo. In terms of performance, IQ and build quality would this be a good place to start? I know there is no perfect lens in terms of speed and focal lenght but I want to start with a quality all purpose lens so I will not be looking back and wondering what if. It needs to be my primary go to lens.
