Natural light photogs...do you use OCF for fill flash?

I am a natural light photog (very new) and do a lot of shooting in open shade. I have JUST started using reflectors and have noticed a big difference. My mentor suggested the use of OCF for fill flash. I was wondering how this effects the natural light "look" of the photo? I took a quick snap shot of the guy at the camera store with and w/o OCF (in open shade) and to me- the nice warm skin tone was washed out with flash? (I did use a diffuser). I shoot Canon 50D and was looking at the 430 EX II if it makes a difference.

Thank you so much in advance!

Kristi
