CZ 16-35 or 24-70 on A850?
Jun 25, 2010

Hi Folks,

I'm thinking of buying the Sony A850. I currently use a Nikon D200 and see the sony as a way of potentially emulating the quality from medium format without the expense or time. I primarily take landscape photos and people photos when travelling (www.meekymanphotography.co.uk). Also the odd studio portrait session as well. The camera has to last me a good five years and I'm marrying next year and maybe kids after that if we're lucky.

So, with all this in mind I'm thinking of two options:

1) CZ 16-35mm + 50mm 1.4 + some telephoto zoom/prime (70-300G, beercan, 135 2.8 etc)

2) CZ 24-70mm + 20mm 2.8 + some telephoto zoom/prime (70-300G, beercan, 135 2.8 etc)

I tend to use the 20-60mm range mostly for my landscapes, so given it's flexibility for landscapes and portraits option (2) appeals. BUT, lenses are generally worst at their extremes, so the 16-35 covers the all important to me 20-30mm range in its mid-settings. So, how good is the 24-70 at 24-35mm? Sharpness is important, but how about distortion/flare/CA?

I can not afford both 16-35 and 24-70!

Cheers

Graham
