Printing on hard suface medium

Over the years when I had pro photography prints done of my family/kids, the pictures in some cases would be printed on some type of hard board material that were framed and did not use (need) glass over the picture. The material seems to be something harder (more sustantial) than foam board prints you can have made at the local lab. What type of priting process did they use?
