How can I get better auto shots out of the s90?

Don't get me wrong, the s90 is a fabulous camera. It is very capable of producing great results if I tweak the settings before taking each photo. However, there are those moments when I don't have time to set everything, in which case the photos are not as good as the camera is capable of. I want to know what i can do to get better results than I do in full auto mode, while not having to worry about changing a bunch of settings before each shot. I've only had the camera for about two weeks, so I'd be happy to hear any tips and tricks to get better shots. Thank you.
