Another train shot
Jun 14, 2010

Norfolk Southern train 13T at Burns, NY. The lead engine is owned by BNSF. The sun peeked through yesterday's mix of low hanging clouds and fog. Nikon D5000 and 18-105mm lens.

This is becoming the preferred setup: Auto ISO min-max at 200-3200. Minimum shutter speed 1/320th second (have trouble stopping the action at 50 MPH at anything less). Test the scene and the focal length using P-mode. If the aperture is small enough to provide decent depth of field, go with it. If not, shift to A mode and use f/8 or something greater, keeping an eye on what's happening with ISO. If it pushes ISO up to 320 or 400, no problem. Beyond that I'm a little more cautious but as we all know the D5000 can handle higher ISOs with aplomb.

It may be of interest that in the 1960s a train derailed at this location. One neighbor was watching TV when part of a freight car came crashing through the wall into his living room.
