Will an f/1.4 lens give better results at f/2.8 than a f/2.8 lens?

However, you will probably find that the autofocus speed of your 2.8 zoom will be quicker, so then what is the better result for a fast moving subject?

Why?

Less junk to move. Most zooms focus internally, moving just a single lens group. A 50mm f/1.4 is focused by moving the entire lens, which is a substantial hunk of stuff. It is also likely that the zoom group has to move a shorter distance than the prime lens too.
