Should I upgrade my D40 to D5000?
Jun 13, 2010

Hi

I have e Nikon D2h and D40. Sometimes I want the feel, AF and speed from my D2h and sometimes I want the weight and size from my D40. Therefore I use them about 50/50.

Unfortunately I can't afford a D300s or D700, and due to a child and wedding on it's way, I won't be able to spend 2k or 3k or more on a camera in the near future.

But also because of these groundbreaking events in my life comming up, I now feel the need to upgrade my camera. What I would like is better IQ (less noise), video and better LCD (in that order). The D5000 would give me better IQ and video (btw is the video in the D5000 equal to that os the D300s?). Buying a D5000s would probably mean I would almost never use my D2h due to the better IQ in the D5000.

But when comparing the D5000 to my current D40, the differences doesn't look all that great. Asside from video, I get almost the same screen (2.5" vs. 2.7" and both 230.000 pixels), and when shooting below ISO 800, I wonder how big the difference in IQ is?

Therefore I would like to hear from people upgrading from the D40 (or other 6 MP Nikon body) to the D5000 (or other 12 MP Nikon DX body). How was the jump in real world pictures? Should I rather save the money, and wait for second hand D700 with grip to come down in price (no video though).

PS. My lenses is a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC, Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR, some small primes and a Sigma 12-24 I rarely use.
