any lens will give you more out of focus blur if you use it close up, and one of the big advantages of the 18-55 is that it has a pretty good close focus ability.

that said, i think you should skip the 18-55 entirely and just go with a 35/1.8. if you like to do selective focus, this lens will suit you much better. you can always save for the midrange zoom down the road if you find you want it.

i would be less inclined to go with the d3000 since it has the older sensor and you lose a stop or so of low light.
