I use soft cases like the Tenba "airi cases" but have the gear inside protected with bubble wrap. Problem with the Pelicans is the case alone will weigh 18 lbs. or more and with gear I can easily incur overweight charges of $100 per bag per direction (American Airlines for example).

A good way to minimize damage I have found is to take even large bags through security and then gate check them. That way they are first on and first off and you avoid the TSA thieves and mangles operating in the bulk processing areas of the airport.
