300 f/4L AF Noise

Anybody have a quiet AF on their 300 f/4L IS? I had mine for several years, never noticed the noise, not that it wasn't there, I just never noticed it. I sold it on ebay recently and the buyer is dissatisfied with it because it the af clunks when it hunts. Is this a defect, or just the nature of the beast?
Anybody ever had this repaired from Canon? How much $?
