For personal use, you might consider a service like Carbonite, CrashPlan or several others. They charge a low monthly or yearly fee for unlimited storage from your local computer (internal drives only).

Dropbox is great for syncing files between several computers over the Internet, but their storage plans are a bit expensive as a backup solution.

Combine that with local external drives for local backups and that is a nice and robust backup system.
