I couldn't agree more with your assessment of distortion correction. It's not cheating and making a lens seem better than it really is because what you gain in better distortion handling you lose in sharpness due to resamping the image. It becomes a trade-off between sharpness, distortion and lens size.

I'm all for automatic correction, although it would be good if it was easier to disable in raw converters if someone wanted to work with the uncorrected image.
