Tamron 17-50mm a mistake?

I recently Upgraded to a 50D and a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC ....i had been caught up on having a 2.8 on my lens....i keep hearing lots of great things about the Canon 15-85....is it worth the return and the extra cash or is the 17-50 still a good investment...17 is pretty wide, though it would't hurt to have the 15...as well as the reach of 85....but the 2.8 is nice ...i do find myself stopping down more lately as i see the result of keeping at a 2.8 doesn't jsut let more light in, but gives more a more acute focal point....have i made a mistake with the Tamron?
