Under Expose or Over Expose - General Rule of Thumb for 7D...

Hello all.
I've noticed from time to time on DP Review that users suggest setting the exposure to "over expose" on the Canons.
Not that there's a right or wrong way, but I was under the impression that for digital, if you "under expose" the sensors can still capture the detail in the shadows, thus giving the DSLR every opportunity to capture the details in the highlights (with out blowing them) as well as the shadows, and then one can manipulate in your RAW processor of choice?
I always shot "under" with my old Nikon D50, as I was lead to believe that over-exposure was more sutied to film days (and use Grad-filters) as film can capture shadow details.
I did get some great shots back in them days, and still do with my 7D. Just wondered what others did/prefered and how they came to soot that way.
Cheers
