D3S and aerials of NYC - camera pushed to the limits
May 14, 2010

I recently had th thrilling opportunity to do 2 helicopter flights over NYC. This was not a tourist aerial joyride helicopter, but a photography specialist 2-seater helicopter with a pilot who understands photographer needs, with removable plexiglass section for the camera.

2 flights were done - sunrise and sunset, for 1.5hrs each - and I was able to get about 1400 images (or 4200 bracketed). I used the 24-70mm/2.8 lens, setting at S 1/1000, ISO1000 onwards. As light faded the ISO hit the roof...

Here are some takes from the flights:

Evening:

More images can be seen here, still being updated:
http://www.pbase.com/gbc/aerialny - the EXIF data available.

Note: 'edited' implies tone, color, sharpening and denoising processes were applied.
Pictures taken late evening, with ISO> 12,800 are untouched.

I hope you enjoy these pictures - it has been the most exhilarating experience for me.
