Some posters have complained about both but more so the focus. I own and have owned several Sigma lenses but have not experienced these problems. i do have one Sigma which is a bit softer on one side than the other but the problem did not manifest itself (or at least I didn't notice it) until I owned the lens awhile.

You get a good copy by buying from a reputable dealer with a reasonable return policy and than use the lens quite a bit as soon as you get it to see if it meets your expectations. Buying in store and testing sample shots on a laptop can be helpful if the option is available to you.
