Macro lens suggestions

Can you folks make some recommendations regarding a good macro lens for a novice photographer. She's already doing some close stuff with her regular lens. I don't think she's quite ready for extension tubes, lens reversal, bellows, or other advanced techniques. I think she needs a good "get yer feet wet with macro" lens that is fairly versatile and moderately priced. Hopefully some of you Canon folks can tell me what the best bets are.

The subjects will be mostly bugs, flowers and other such items as found in nature.
