If you could only pick one lens...
May 10, 2010

Trying to quit photography is hard. Too hard for me, so I'm going to melt the credit card for a month or two. I've decided on a system and a body, and the only decision left is the lens. I'm not going to be able to get back to where I was, and I'm going to be limited to one lens for a while. Once I've managed to replace the tripod and the remote and all that stuff, then I'll finally be able to look at another lens.

My choices are narrowed down to the following:
1. Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6G VR

2. 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR

3. Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II VC

4. Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.0 DC Macro OS

I'm pretty sure that it won't be the 70-300 for now - I might get that to replace my old 70-200 f/2.8 sooner than if I saved up for that. But looking through my albums, most of my photography is done closer up, and wide apertures are important to me.

Of the remaining three, which is the best choice? I know that the Nikon is quite slow compared to the others. The Sigma gives me an extra 20mm, but what about the quality overall ?

Any opinions on these 4 lenses would be much appreciated!
