Sigma 30mm 1.4 ..... but what about the 28/1.8 and 35/2?
May 6, 2010

I'm looking to get my first lens for my 50D, and I want something to replace the 20mm f1.7 lens I used on my previous camera (olympus E-P1).

For those unaware, the 20mm equates to a 40mm fov (2x crop). I found that the f1.7 and the IBIS in the E-P1 was perfect for low light social snaps (dim restaurants etc).

So, I was thinking about the Sigma 30mm 1.4. Reasons being, it will give me a similar fov, it's a stop faster, and combined with the 1 stop or so gain in high iso over m4/3s should be as handholdable as my 20mm 1.7 was.

But after reading some reviews (photozone weren't impressed), looks like this lens has some major issues:

  • It's impossible to get a copy that AFs correctly.

  • It's apparently not too sharp wide open

I'm on a budget, and my other two options are the:

28/1.8 - discounted it because it's slower than the 1.7, which alomost certainly means I wont be able to handhold it. But I like the fov more than the other two choices.

35/2 - bit too long on a crop for me, and f2 isn't going to be fast enough. In its favour, it's cheap.

I'm more confident about getting a canon lens with regards to AF.

So, any thoughts or opinions - interested to hear from owners of either lens.
