Given your location work, I suggest a few speedlights and some radio triggers. They are exceptionally versatile, lightweight/portable, and represent more sources of highly controllable light for the dollar than studio strobes. Delve into strobist.com, a virtual university of valuable info, case studies, and gear/technique coaching from a pro. David Hobby's instructional DVD, Lighting Bootcamp, is terrific - clear and comprehensive; it's all about speedlighting. McNAlly's book, Hot Shoe Diaries, is also terrific.

On the other hand, if you are committed to studio strobes, see David's quick eval of the Einstein, which is Buff's newly introduced 'super alien bee.' His view seems to be that the value and quality are unbeatable - and that's coming from a pro who recently invested in Profoto. The only downside seems to be the reflector, which is an option anyway and can easily be swapped out. Here is his take:
