With the iPod there was only one model for the first couple of years and then it grew into a family of devices.

Also you have the iPod Touch which is a bit of the iPhone and a bit of the iPod, so I would expect their to be a whole group of iPod/iPhone/iPad with mix and match choices.

The A4 processor is apparently a souped ARM Corvex 8 ( like a lot of smart phones ) which means at the moment it has limited processing power. However Apple has bought up several specialist chip design or modification companies as well as having licenses to build their own varieties of the basic ARM processor as well as their existing graphics hardware suppliers designs.

At the moment I need to purchase a new small notebook rather than an iPad but that may not be the case within a couple of years. I think by then not only will some of the iPads be more powerful but a lot of very smart software people out there will figure out how to do many different things.
