Best prime to start out with'

hi everyone!

what is the best prime lens to start out with? I have a Nikon D200. I have been told that its best to start out with a prime lens! What are the reasons for this? Is it good advice? And which one. The 50mm nikon 1.4 seems nice, but thats not very wide..
