But that is not because of the 17 element, but in spite of it. It needs 17 elements due to the IS feature and the following correcting elements. The same lens could have been made even better, all things equal, without the IS feature. The IS elements adds nothing positive to the lens optical performance. It adds distortion that has to be corrected by further elements. When that is said, when someone like Canon but all their resources into it, it is fully possible to make an IS lens as good or better than one without. My point is that the IS feature add greatly to the complexity of a lens and that is undisputable....
