Why no affordable 400mm from nikon?

Hi All, Being a keen club/National competion photographer my main subject being sport i would really like a decent affordable 400 4.5 or 5.6 lens and from what i have read on this site many times there are a lot of people wishing for the same.

I have read the reviews for the 80-400 zoom's out there and it appears they dont cut it. I just dont understand why nikon would not fill this gap as it appears there would be a big market for this type of lens, you guy's out there have any idea why they wont produce this lens.
