Sigma 50-500mm OS vs Canon 100-400 IS
Apr 29, 2010

Okay just got Sigma 50-500mm OS and preliminary tested it against Canon 100-400mm IS.

It is very windy here right now so I could not use it on tripod so I handheld some shots with both lenses.

My findings: It is much better than 2 of them I had before (finally) and only somewhat better than Canon 100-400mm IS. At 400mm I would say maybe, maybe 10% better wide open (but I had 100-400mm at 6.3 too so it was not wide open) and at 500mm it did not improve but because of better magnification it is just automatically better. Seems like OS is about 1 stop (again maybe) better than IS. Just feels like it no tests done.

When wind subsides I will formally test it but so far so good. Zoom is stiff but does not creep. Does not feel heavy at all. Focuses somewhat closer than Canon.
Plus it is not white so not much attention will be given in the field.

I think I will keep it and sell Canon. The only problem I found so far is that it does not report true distance and I had to dial +10 on 7D for microadjustment where Canon is -4.

The only time a smaller sensor with the same pixel count is superior to a larger sensor (aka higher pixel density) is when you are focal-length limited.
