I am deciding between the 50mm Summicron Rigid and a 50mm f/1.5 Sonnar. I have found a large amount of information regarding the Zeiss, but haven't come across a lot about the older 50mm rigid. It is a Type II (1956-1968).

I took a couple sample shots in a dimly lit shop with the rigid, but couldn't decided conclusively. One thing that I did like was the color rendition.

FWIW - I'll be using on an M8 and my only other lens is a 35mm Summarit.

Thoughts?

I have the summicron rigid DR which I believe is the same optical formula as the none Dr. Its sharp from f4 onwards and has a distinct look to its photos, perhaps its lacking the optimum micro contrast of the modern designs but its creamy smooth.

You won't be disapointed. Just make sure that it has not suffered from fungus and excessive cleaning. The older Leica lenses were soft coated and its very easy to loose the coating.
