200-400 VRII vs 300 f4 VR or 80-400 AFS

Nikon continues to upgrade costly high end lenses. The 300 f2.8 was the last one, now it's the 200-400 that gets VRII and Nano coating. I wouldn't have any objections against that approach if they would as well serve those of their customers that want to buy a state of the art long lens, but don't want to spend 6000 Euros/Dollars.

But what are Nikon's offerings below that level? A 300mm f4 that doesn't have VR at all, and a 80-400 zoom without fast AF. Both of them are 10 years old now, both have been outdated from the start in comparison to their Canon counterparts, that had VR and AFS 10 years ago.

So my question is, would you buy a 300f4 with VR or an 80-400 with AFS, for maybe 2000 Euros/Dollars each, if you had the chance?

Or will you buy a 200-400 VRII for 6000?

I'm firmly convinced that Nikon could sell many more of these less costly lenses, so I just don't get it why they refuse to offer state of the art lenses to that market.
