does an external power pack reduce overheating

Does using an external power pack for a Canon speedlite style flash reduce any overheating tendencies?
If it's the DC to high voltage converter that is overheating, then I'd think it would, providing the flash software is smart enough to know that an external power pack is being used and not issue a warning base purely on number of flashes.
I guess the next question is whether external power packs can overheat . . .
