550D Raw seems softer than JPG?
Apr 25, 2010

Hi all, I've been using my 550D and 18-55mm kit lens for a couple of days and was just reviewing the pics I've taken in the supplied Canon 'Digital Photo Professional' software.

The RAW files (.CR2) are around 25MB and JPG's are around 8MB as you'd expect at the highest quality setting.

If I open both the RAW and JPG of the same image and set the window to syncronise, and view at 100% (and 200%), both images are near identical, except for a very slight sharpening on the JPG, the RAW being quite soft in comparison, but I can't see any more noise or detail in the RAW which is surprising.

I've checked several pics across various settings (ISO 100-400) in different modes but still the same result...

Any ideas guys, I thought the whole point of RAW is to capture more detail?

I'm not sure if this is a fair test, but here's the raw and jpg imported in photoshop, cropped and exported as jpg.

Many Thanks.
