Why do they say the human eye is like a 50mm prime?

Why do people compare the human eye to a 50mm lens? Is it because the world looks similarly sized through a viewfinder with a 50mm lens? Surely this is due to the magnification of the viewfinder prism, not the lens.

So why do people compare our eyes to 50mm lenses? My eyes see a much wider field of view than 50mm, so I'm confused. Anyone know more about this confusing topic? Thanks
