40D still a good bet?

I'm an Olympus shooter, but I've always been intrigued by the EOS 40D. I know it's "old", but I wanted to hear your thoughts on using it as my main camera to replace what I'm using now. I'm also interested in knowing its perfomance with long exposure night photography. Finally, I often saw it coupled with the 28-135 lens...if you had to get one lens, what would you recommend? Thanks for any help you can give.
