When I use Continuous Autofocus (AF-C) what are the advantages of not using the 51 points 3D tracking ? Why shoud I use the 21 points, 9 points or single point ?

Think of situations that make spot metering desireable.

In 3D-tracking the camera always uses the center point, with the other modes metering is linked to the inital AF point.

Spot metering meters a 3 mm circle (about 2% of frame) centered on selected focus point (on center focus point only when non-CPU lens is used). I am pretty sure this is the case even in 3D-tracking. Center weighted meters around the center of the VF.
